What a Storm We Had. . .
The BIG BAD WOLF was certainly trying to BLOW our house down this past Tuesday. . .He howled and blew and blew and blew with WIND up to 80 mph. . . drenching RAIN and a little HAIL to boot. . ..We huddled inside. . .HOPING and PRAYING that once the storm was over, we'd still have a home. . .and barns. . .and buildings. . .
BOOM. . .BOOM. . .BOOM. . .BOOM. . .CRASH. . .There went the porch roof. . .CRASH. . .SHATTER. . .BANG. . .There went the glass in the garden shed. . .BANG. . .BANG. . .KERPLUNK. . .KERPLUNK. . .KERPLUNK. . .KERPLUNK. . .KERPLUNK. . .There went the porch rockers, tumbling over and over and over again toward the field. . .WHAT'S THAT? IS THE HOUSE REALLY MOVING? . . .yep. . .it is. . .ARE OUR WINDOWS REALLY PUSHING INWARD WITH RAIN POURING onto our new wood floors? . . yep. . .they are. . .Hey. . .THE LIGHTS WENT OUT. . .yep. . .they did. . .
It just went on and on and on. . .I thought it would never stop. . .Once it did, I didn't want to look outside. . .I had that sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. . .
The FRONT PORCH ROOF was gone. . .pieces of it laying in the yard and field. . .half of the rest of the porch had been lifted up and set back down. . .nails were sticking up on the PORCH FLOOR everywhere. . .some WINDOWS in the outbuildings SHATTERED. . .minor damage to the SHOTGUN HOUSES. . .with the exception of water in one of them. . .the STORE PORCH was cleared of it's display. . .as was the shotgun and house porch. . .I spent almost half a day WALKING the fields, SEARCHING for lost items, and DRAGGING them back where they belonged. . .Lost all the FRUIT off our trees. . .BUT. . .all in all, we were once again blessed. . .It could have been so much worse than it was. . .Sure. . .We have lots of repair work to do. . .a NEW ROOF for the porch is our priority. . .but it's nothing that we can't handle. . .
I've had emails from several people, concerned about the damage. . .so I thought I'd follow with photos and an update. . .The good news is that WE ARE FINE. . .the animals are fine. . .the barns are still standing. . .and SOON all WILL once again be RIGHT with our world. . .
AND THROUGH IT ALL. . .
POOCHIE SLEPT. . .
I don't know how. . .
Reminding us that. . .all in all. . .

From the Porch. . .
A couple of months ago, I made my way to the porch's far side. . . .trying to catch John as he went by on the tractor. . . .and surprise. . . .surprise. . . .I fell through the porch floor. . . .That was the day John decided a porch replacement was necessary this year. . . .We had put it off too long.
I confess. . . .It's mostly my fault. . . .(Quit smiling, John). . . .When the wrap-around porch was added to our home seven years ago. . . .(has it really been that long?). . . .nothing would satisfy me but one of those beautiful perfectly painted floors that I was seeing in all the top magazines and books. . . .We found stacks of tongue and groove pine in the barn previously, so I insisted we use that for the porch floor. . . .reassuring everyone that "we'll just have to keep it painted". . . .Yeah. . . .Right. . . .Little did I know about the harsh weather conditions. . . .When you're house is stuck out in the middle of a cotton fields with no windbreaks or protection, things quickly deteriorate. . . .Poor John. . . .Every year he'd have to scrape and repaint after replacing and repairing that year's rotten wood. . . .I felt badly about it. . . .yet, neither of us could find the time to change it. . . .Last year I told John to not bother with his yearly ritual. . . .We'd replace the floor soon. . . .Me falling through was the last straw. . . .John said it was time. . . .No argument from me. . . .I had lost interest in painted porch floors. . . .Funny how that happens. . . .(grin)
Two sides down and one to go. . .Treated wood that will weather to a soft gray. . . .No paint. . . .Able to run around barefoot again. . . .so very much better. . . .The eight white rockers will soon come out of the barn. . . .I have a date with one of them when that happens. . . .A whole afternoon with nothing to do but look out over the farm. . . .count my blessings. . . .and rock my cares and troubles away. . . .LIFE IS GOOD. . . .
